I’m not a romantic. Neither is my husband. We don’t do a great job at celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, or holidays.
That being said celebrating these days is something we’re working on. Around year three of our marriage the idea hit me that even though we don’t “need” to celebrate our anniversary in order to feel loved celebrating the day is a good thing.
Our wedding day is something worth celebrating. So are the days we came into this world. Remembering days like Valentines Day and why they began are also important.
Do you know the story of St. Valentine?
The story goes that he was performing illegal marriages for Christians and was killed for it on February 14. Even though the holiday has now been turned into hearts and ribbons and flowers, I think celebrating Valentines is so very beautiful.
3 Date Night Ideas
Here are a some date night ideas that we love to do, and some things to keep in mind.
- Movie Night and Take Out – This is one of our favorite date nights. We usually do Mexican food and watch a movie from our watchlist or an episode of Survivor. If you have kids, you don’t really need a baby sitter for this one. I heard once of someone who made their date night a fun night for the kids too. Make a fun meal and eat early (like 4 pm). While you take a bath and reset your mind, your hubby can play with the kids and put them to bed around 6:30 or 7. Then y’all spend the rest of the night eating your take out, watching your movie, and spending quality time together.
- Fancy Dinner Out – Fancy Dates don’t happen often for us partly because we’re not very bougie ourselves. Fancy is fun every now and then, so about twice a year we get dressed up and find a fancy restaurant to go to.
- Outdoor dates – make a picnic lunch, grab some blankets, and head to a nearby park or river walk. Go on a walk/hike.
Last but not least, don’t have crazy expectations. Just plan a couple of hours a week to be intentional. Your marriage is important. So celebrate today however it looks for you. Have fun, order some flowers, and send some cards. Happy Valentines Day!
